From doubt to success
Tina Frederiksen had more or less given up on electronic sow feeding.
The previous systems she’d tried were cumbersome and created more work than they saved.
But that changed in 2023, when she installed 11 FREEDA Walk In ESF stations across three gestation pens at her farm in Romlund, Denmark.
“After just the first week, we could see the difference,” Tina says. “The sows settled much faster, and we had a far more uniform group. There’s less agitation, fewer injuries – and almost no feed waste.”
“After just one week, we could see that the sows were calmer and more uniform.”
“The system gives us data we can trust – and it shows in the results.”
Facts instead of feelings
Before installing the Walk In system, Tina and her team struggled with large variations in body condition and feed efficiency. Today, each sow is fed according to an individual curve, and the software data provide a clear overview of progress – day by day.
“If a sow doesn’t eat as she normally does, we’re notified right away,” Tina says. “That means we can react early and prevent problems before they grow.”
The results speak for themselves: feed consumption has dropped from 1,552 to 1,407 feed units per sow per year – a significant and tangible saving.
At the same time, the sows’ condition has become more consistent, and reproductive performance has improved.
Built for reality – and for the future
Even though the barn is older and uses deep litter, the system was installed without major modifications. The sows quickly learned to use the stations – almost without training.
“We were curious to see how they’d respond,” Tina says. “But they got it right away.
It’s simple – and it just works.”
After such a positive experience, plans for the future are already in place: Walk In will be an integral part of the coming expansion of the production.
For Tina, it’s not just about saving feed or time – it’s about making the right decisions based on data.
“I believe there’s always room to improve – but that requires having the right data to act on. Walk In helps us do exactly that.”
